See What Your Mac is Doing.

All versions of Mac OS X come with Activity Monitor. Activity Monitor can be found in Applications>>Utilities. This program is very useful, but can take up a lot of monitor space. A more compact and simplier way to look at your machines activity is use the program developed by Raging Menance called MenuMeters.

MenuMeters is a set of CPU, memory, disk, and network monitoring tools for MacOS X. MenuMeters is a freeware program that displays it information on the menubar. You can customize what information is displayed through a preference pane in System Preferences.
